According to the manufacturer, Transcend StoreJet 25H3P is external hard drive that “has it all” – speed, capacity, and above all – shock resistant. Since our job is data recovery and we receive external hard drives every day, whether that have been exposed to hits or suffered very mild shocks, we had to check this information.

DESIGN

What you can notice at first glance is its size.

Namely, this model of Transcend portable drive is larger than the average 2.5″ model. On the other hand, that is typical for all Transcend models which means that the manufacturer only remained faithful to the tradition.

This model is made of solid purple-gray rubber which makes it’s stylish look but also protection from falls and shocks. The chassis is comprised of three separate layers – a silicone inner holding the drive, a hard plastic shell surrounding this then a rubber coating finishing things off.

Protective rubber is placed all over the surface in order to soften shocks and prevent physical damage of the case and the hard drive. The drive comes with a automatic backup button characteristical for Transcend drives. The included quick start guide is reasonably unnecessary as it doesn’t go far beyond “plug drive in”, however it does give detailed overview of the Transcend Elite software* installed on the hard disk.

*Transcend Elite is advanced new software that includes powerful user-friendly applications that help mobile users manage their data and increase productivity. It’s very usefull because makes easy to keep important files organized, protected and up-to-date.

Supported connections are USB 3.0 and older USB 2.0, which provides large number of users. It can be used on computers that do not support USB 3.0 connection, while the faster connection allows demanding users high data transfer rate and it is timesaving.

Transcend StoreJet 25H3P comes in 500GB, 750GB, 1TB i 1,5TB capacity which is standard.

PERFORMANCE

We have compared data transfer rate from/to Transcend 25H3P 1TB with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 connection. Check out what our results have shown:

Both tests show stability of the entire LBA zone. No excessive vibration when reading and writing, which is a direct indicator of the continuous quality of the media.

The difference in average speed of sequential reading/writing data with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 connection is huge. Speed with the USB 3.0 connection is more than three times higher. This parameter indicates the transfer rate of large files – programs, music, movies, pictures, etc. and it is important for external hard drives.

Random writting/reading speed tests show almost equal results. This one is important for the performance of the system drive.
We haven’t found any stricture regarding the speed rate. It is above average in it’s class*.

CONCLUSION

Protective rubber and extra silicon protection between the hard disk and the external box is apparently good solution. However, if we consider the sensitivity of the mechanical parts of hard disk drive, the rubber is not nearly enough to protect it. It is unlikely that it will save the hard drive and the stored data from the fall or a major shock. This drive is a good solution for users who use a portable hard drive on daily basis because it is more reliable than others that do not have any extra protection, only an external box (plastic or metal). Portable hard drives are exposed to shocks and the probability that it will fail is very high. Therefore, portable hard drives should not be used for storage only for data transfer from one computer to another, from one location to another…

Our recommendation for Transcend StoreJet USB 3.0 25H3P goes to users who need a fast hard drive, easy to use that can, if necessary, store large amount of data. That includes business people who travel a lot and students. Important notice: Always make a copy of the data in case you accidentally knock the drive over the table, kicks it or run over by car … (These are just some of the situations that have happened to our clients.)
